9x03 “I’m no Angel”
AKA “WOW, HUMANITY SUCKS”
Is someone keeping a running total of lies told to loved ones, by Dean?
I feel like this should exist. If not then I’ll start it this weekend.
Dean coming home covered in blood from their latest hunt and Benny stares at him for a while before pressing him up against the door and kissing him until Dean is gasping for breath. Then he scoops Dean up and carries him to the bathroom to strip him down and clean him off all the dirt and dried blood and Dean will ask him if he’s okay because his eyes are bloodshot and he’s hungry but Benny will just smile and tell him it’s okay. Everything’s okay.

I’ll never get over how perfectly natural they look together. Like two halves of one whole. How in sync they are. How well they naturally work together. Their partners in crime. Partners in everything. And that’s what they’re realizing. It’s what Cas realized in going to Dean for help. And it’s what Dean has known all along but is just starting to fight for. I just can’t get over how amazing they are together. How much love and trust and devotion there is between them that, like Jensen said, goes beyond anything anyone could throw at them.
When you look back at the early Cas seasons, whenever he and Dean talked, they would always argue about their differing goals, and get stubbornly angry, and (in Dean’s case) act really fucking rude. Every conversation was like a battle, a mean to an end. They couldn’t be in each other’s presence without tension filling the air.
It’s such a drastic difference from this season, where their relationship has become so easy. Open. Honest. (Even though their screentime together has been scarce.) This is their first conversation without any amnesia, purgatory, deals with Crowley, apocalypse, quest to find God, or orders from heaven. For once, nobody is controlling them. There are no cataclysms for them to stop. They are doing the trials because they want to, not because any outside forces are forcing their hand. You can really see that they prefer to be in each other’s presence, despite everything. And obviously Dean doesn’t want Cas to die, but he won’t fight Castiel’s decision. Unlike season six, they now respect the other’s choices. Their stubbornness isn’t keeping them apart.
So they sit, and they talk sparingly because they never could say the most important things out loud, but the simple fact that they are there together after all things is a small miracle in of itself. Cas could easily finish the trial on his own. It means so much that Cas would ask Dean for his help even though he doesn’t truly need it, and Dean accepts even though the gates of hell aren’t yet closed. Despite the tablets, and the crypts, and heaven and hell precariously hanging in the balance, Cas reached out and Dean answered. They both want to have their last goodbye, though neither would ever call it that. So there they are, sharing a quiet moment with a beer in their hands, both aware that they may never see each other again, like nothing more than two old buddies who are spending some time together… Even now they still choose each other, however briefly. They aren’t capable of saying the things they want, but they are together and it’s all they need in the uncertainty of their futures.
That’s lovely. That’s just love
