9x03 “I’m no Angel”
AKA “WOW, HUMANITY SUCKS”
If you aren’t following Cas’ Trench coat on twitter you are living life wrong
it was only a matter of time
So ever since it came out that Cas is going to arrive at the bunker only to leave it immediately after, presumably at the request of Dean and insistence of Ezekiel, I’ve been lying in bed awake at night, staring at the ceiling, thinking about life.
But then last night, I came to a glorious conclusion that I know probably won’t happen but definitely should:
Obviously, Cas isn’t shoved unceremoniously into the world like an unwelcome stray, but is instead given a packed bag and an address pressed into his palm which of course takes him to Charlie, wherever she’s holed up. And as Dean figures out what to do about Sam and Ezekiel, Charlie brings (attempts to catch) Cas up to speed on all this human stuff and constructs a new identity for him and they stay up late watching Star Trek
They totally take turns reading The Hobbit out loud to each other. Charlie reads while Cas learns how to cook, Cas reads while Charlie’s doing whatever she does on her computer. And maybe they just both read silently when it’s raining, tucked under blankets and armed with hot coffee, and when they find a passage they especially enjoy, they read it out loud. And become best friends. Forever.
And when Dean finally shows up to collect Cas, Charlie drives back with them to stay a few days at the bunker, and Dean finds that they’re really annoying and giggly and grumpy together and already have a ton of inside jokes and gang up on Dean and Sam (Kevin happily joins them). And then everyone is happy and the rest of the season is them playing Dungeons and Dragons and cospalying together, the end.

I’ll never get over how perfectly natural they look together. Like two halves of one whole. How in sync they are. How well they naturally work together. Their partners in crime. Partners in everything. And that’s what they’re realizing. It’s what Cas realized in going to Dean for help. And it’s what Dean has known all along but is just starting to fight for. I just can’t get over how amazing they are together. How much love and trust and devotion there is between them that, like Jensen said, goes beyond anything anyone could throw at them.
When you look back at the early Cas seasons, whenever he and Dean talked, they would always argue about their differing goals, and get stubbornly angry, and (in Dean’s case) act really fucking rude. Every conversation was like a battle, a mean to an end. They couldn’t be in each other’s presence without tension filling the air.
It’s such a drastic difference from this season, where their relationship has become so easy. Open. Honest. (Even though their screentime together has been scarce.) This is their first conversation without any amnesia, purgatory, deals with Crowley, apocalypse, quest to find God, or orders from heaven. For once, nobody is controlling them. There are no cataclysms for them to stop. They are doing the trials because they want to, not because any outside forces are forcing their hand. You can really see that they prefer to be in each other’s presence, despite everything. And obviously Dean doesn’t want Cas to die, but he won’t fight Castiel’s decision. Unlike season six, they now respect the other’s choices. Their stubbornness isn’t keeping them apart.
So they sit, and they talk sparingly because they never could say the most important things out loud, but the simple fact that they are there together after all things is a small miracle in of itself. Cas could easily finish the trial on his own. It means so much that Cas would ask Dean for his help even though he doesn’t truly need it, and Dean accepts even though the gates of hell aren’t yet closed. Despite the tablets, and the crypts, and heaven and hell precariously hanging in the balance, Cas reached out and Dean answered. They both want to have their last goodbye, though neither would ever call it that. So there they are, sharing a quiet moment with a beer in their hands, both aware that they may never see each other again, like nothing more than two old buddies who are spending some time together… Even now they still choose each other, however briefly. They aren’t capable of saying the things they want, but they are together and it’s all they need in the uncertainty of their futures.
That’s lovely. That’s just love
#then we hug the angel #and tell him how much we need him#then we hallucinate the angel#then we get an awkward boner when the angel comes back#then we get our memories to shift so we don’t think the angel really wanted to leave us#then we ask the angel to stay #then we pray to the angel again#then we tell the angel we need him again#then we act sad when he leaves and reference a band with a song called ‘angel mine’#then we give the angel the silent treatment#then we watch a movie with the angel and eat popcorn#then we tell the angel that we need him to stay here and get better#then we go for drinks with the angel and a cupid shows up#then we really loudly yell out the angel’s full name because we are worried about him#that’s it #that’s season 8 #destiel #supernatural
like im not shitting you thats all of s8. right there.
Oh, this is good. Showing us the direct parallels of Dean with former girlfriends and Dean with Castiel. There’s no difference, other than the fact that Dean and Castiel’s love story is so much more prolific than any previous relationship Dean has had. This is one my favorite kinds of vids. <3 <3 <3
